(Gympie Times) IN a show of defiance, Cr Jan Watt decided to walk out on a Gympie Regional Council Works and Services Committee meeting discussion about fluoride on Tuesday. She said council was instructed by the Queensland Government to vote in favour of fluoridation and decide how they were going to implement it. Cr Watt said she had a conflict of interest with the discussion as she morally objected to mass medicating without the consent of the people. read more

(SMH) A former Labor powerbroker being paid $450,000 a year as the NBN Co's government relations point man was recommended for the job by Communications Minister Stephen Conroy. Mike Kaiser took up the role with the NBN Co - which will build and operate the $43 billion national broadband network - after quitting as Queensland Premier Anna Bligh's chief of staff last year. Beef imported to Australia from countries where there has been an outbreak of mad cow disease will not be traced back to individual farms, a Senate inquiry has been told. Yet beef farms in Australia are subject to full traceability through the National Livestock Identification System. The double standard drew the ire of coalition senators during a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra on Monday. "How on earth ... can we be sure about the beef that's coming from that (overseas) property?" (AdelaideNow) ALL Australian homes will have to undergo a mandatory energy-efficiency assessment - costing up to $1500 per property - before they can be sold or rented under new laws to tackle carbon emissions. The mandatory assessment - being drafted into law by the federal and state governments - will rate homes by an energy efficiency star system, similar to the ratings given to fridges and washing machines. It will apply to all commercial properties from later this year and to all residential properties from May 2011, Adelaide Now reports. NSW govt must release land: opposition

(SMH) Housing in Sydney will not get any cheaper until the NSW government begins releasing land in the city's outer suburbs, the opposition says. Coalition 'burying past' over vegetation

(SMH) Federal Agriculture Minister Tony Burke has questioned what the coalition has to hide over the Howard government's involvement in state vegetation laws. The Senate on Thursday allowed an inquiry to go ahead into laws that stop farmers from clearing their land due to environmental restrictions. Attorney-General Rob Hulls says one option on the table is a levy imposed on offenders to contribute to a victims compensation fund. Senator Joyce described as "galling" a decision by the Rudd government to give the World Bank $150 million, a third of which he said would be used to reduce food inflation in developing nations.[...] Speaking at the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday, Senator Joyce said the government should be giving more attention to "food inflationary aspects in this world" rather than boosting funding to help the third world. Melbourne commuters face weapon scans

(SMH) A hi-tech portable body scanner will be used to search commuters at an inner-Melbourne railway station in a second blitz on people carrying knives. Victoria Police will trial the Gatescan-P metal detector to search commuters at the North Melbourne railway station between 5pm (AEDT) and 9pm on Friday. Commuters will be chosen at random to walk through the metal detector, similar to those at an airport, and if shown to be carrying metal will be searched with a hand-held scanner. Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said the railway station had been chosen for Operation Omni II because intelligence had identified it as a "high knife" area. read more
